The Ingersoll Rand roller is a very beneficial piece of heavy construction equipment, used in the compaction of soil, sand, gravel and rock layers. The machine works by vibrating, force loading, kneading and by applying nonstop pressure on a surface layer. Currently, three of the most commonly used Ingersoll Rand rollers are:

1. Ingersoll Rand Vibratory Roller

Ingersoll rand vibratory rollers offer a solution for almost every problem. The standard issue model comes with two smooth wheels at back, plus the vibrators. The majority of the models have very high frequency together with low amplitude, allowing the construction equipment machines to sustain high paving speeds on thin lifts. Similarly, it supports a low frequency rate, high amplitude mode for low paving speeds on solid lifts. One of their more famous models, the Ingersoll Rand SD100D sets the standard for its performance and reliability. A huge range of drum widths helps users appropriate lyre purpose the equipment with their requirements. One good feature is that vibrators are automatically switched off while the machine is reversing. This lets operators apply a static weight across the surface of the roller if needed.

The vibration is mainly used to decrease air spaces and to compact granular soils. During the vibration process, the waves help with rearranging soil particles, which are present in the surface layer.

2. Ingersoll Rand Smooth Wheel Roller

Ingersoll Rand smooth wheel rollers have very similar characteristics and features with their vibratory roller cousins. The main difference however, is that they both sport distinctly different vibratory equipment. The smooth wheel roller has no vibrator on the drum, therefore making the machine most suited to layer weaker aggregates and compacting asphalt for road paving.

3. Ingersoll Rand Sheep Foot/Tamping Roller

Ingersoll Rand sheep foot rollers are easily distinguished for the studs on their rollers. The steel drum consists of many equivalently-sized rectangular shaped boots arranged in a hexagonal pattern. This arrangement allows the roller to compact surfaces by ‘kneading’ its weight onto the material. The main issue is also due to said design – there is a smaller contact area because of the gaps between the boots. About 8 – 12% less in fact. Because of that, the machines are best used for tasks involving clay soil.
